We have to start off this piece by saying we honestly didn't expect much. Yes we've already said that its largely going to be a post pandemic Care Bear election for socially focused inclusive candidates and so we expected the IOM Green Party to figure well. But equally we've also thought that Mr Langan-Newton has previously been in danger of coming across as some sort of Tony Blair style ego-centrist. So thanks to Paul Moulton and Isle of Man TV for this clip as actually its quite good and we'd urge any Rushen voters to watch it.
The Isle of Man TV Andrew Langan-Newton interview:
In general in any politician voters are looking for just two things - and that's authenticity and passion. And cutting through some of the things that don't quite gel in the above clip that's pretty much what Mr Langan-Newton seems to exude.
Like Bryan Mills in Luc Besson's Taken - Mr Langan-Newton admits to Paul Moulton that he possesses a very unique set of skills, skills that will see him successful in Tynwald. So other Rushen candidates might be concerned that he may well look for you, find you, and ultimately kill you. Rather than a manifesto he has also sent an introductory letter out to the good folk of Rushen setting out his three main policies but then appears to have forgotten to add housing to it as its clearly what everyone has subsequently mentioned on the doorstep. So he now has four main election policies - one of which clearly didn't figure in his initial thought process. But we suppose that's forgivable.
Mr Langan-Newton also says that from an energy perspective the Isle of Man has the wind the sun and the waves - and of course [as we all know] at election time it also has the usual climate of bullshit which reassuringly wasn't particularly evident during this interview. As with all candidates we wish him [and his Party] well and we look forward to reading the full manifesto in due course. To close he most certainly still does have something of the young ego-centrist Blair about him, and he likes using big words that they won't be channelling in the pubs of Port St Mary or Port Erin, but so far he's about as credible and authentic as it gets in the South.
