Today Isle of Man TV covered the Tynwald President hustings in rather effective form we must say. In fact the resultant rather lengthy footage is one of the most open and transparent bits of video reportage we've seen come out of Tynwald in a while. But to us throughout it continually raises serious questions on why Buzz Lightweight [AKA Juan Watterson MHK] is actually an MHK in the first place. But clearly having served his fifteen year apprenticeship pandering to the poor Southern masses its now time for Mr Watterson to seize his chance and shoot for infinity & beyond!
In fact as readers will observe across the three clips we link to below - throughout the hustings Mr Watterson as sitting MHK for Rushen gives the public a very effective and extensive overview of why he does not want to be your MHK for the next five years. This includes him lobbying for the Presidents role [which he is openly expressing interest in being considered for] to be acknowledged as a full time role with no time for any other duties. And why he probably shouldn't have been your MHK in the first place as he has clearly spent so much time not looking after the interests of the people of Rushen in favour of generally poncing around on various committees, sub-committees, and Tynwald Club jollies.
Laurence Skelly is an outgoing MHK who is clearly trying to line up his next well-paid job so that he doesn't have to go back to life in the gift shop. But in Mr Watterson never has a sitting MHK who has still not declared whether they will be standing again spent so much time lobbying to not have to go back and face a public vote. Leaving him with the certain dilemma that if he doesn't get the Presidents job - how can he ever go back to the people of Rushen and say with any credibility that he really wants their mandate for another five years?
