After a protracted radio silence we've sort of decided that enough is enough and a critique on Alfred Cannan's current Fantasy Island strategy is now long overdue. This will come in the next few weeks when the writers of this Blog can adequately contextualise the sheer enormity of the Island's current existential crisis. But as a taster we make the observation that when you can't even sell free tickets to a government update conference, and you have more public sector workers in attendance than actual members of the public, it sort of shows that as a government you have materially lost all touch with reality and that the people you wish to interact with clearly can't even share your reality bubble anymore. Because if you can't see and acknowledge what they see as undeniable fact on a day to day basis what really is the point of participating?

Most gave up trying to paint reality to the Cannan Administration in 2022 - less than a year after the last election. Let alone to individual MHK's who collectively appear now like rabbits completely trapped in the headlights. As MHK's individually or collectively what are you actually doing as supposed representatives of the people? Tynwald resumes in a week or so and its been a long, long, summer of concerted nothingness while the rest of us are just watching the Island we love, and which we are fully invested into, rapidly disappear down the toilet.

As we analyse just some of the 2024 Tynwald recess post toilet flush swirl lets pick out the following bowl floaters just for starters which we will elaborate on separately ..

  • The implosion of the IOM Meat Plant

  • A completely failed Manx Grand Prix (we refuse to call it what you want us to call it)

  • The removal of any perception of reliable Manx air links

  • Manx Care busting its £40M enhanced budget within six months

  • The eradication of reliable IOM sea links

  • Ever burgeoning & unrestrained public sector employment

  • The Manx Rally cancelled due to more government tick boxers

  • The failed 2% high rate tax increase on low earners

  • The proposed NHS levy (an unravelling future disaster policy for low/mid earners)

  • A projected draw of +/- £100M from reserves

  • Greedy and unrealistic public sector pay demands

  • The airports new £120M fantasy investment wish list

  • The lack of any final confirmation of our likely £90M+ Liverpool ferry terminal bill

  • The DOI selling off ten's of minibuses they never should have bought in the first place

  • Building wind farms just to tick sustainability boxes rather than to add substance or value

Mr. Roarke: Once you begin a fantasy, you must see it through to its natural conclusion.

To be continued ..
